ROLLER COASTERS: THE LIFE KIND

Dear Joseph,
I keep returning to the moment when Rick stands in the aftermath of an argument. One moment, he's arguing with his girlfriend, Nevaeh. The next, she's gone. Vanished into a storm of his making. A DeLorean. A violent storm. A local policeman arriving with the terrible news. Rick's worst fear becomes fact. And from there, the story stays close to the wreckage inside him. The guilt. The second-guessing. The need to keep hearing her voice even if it means keeping her phone just so he can hear the voicemail greeting. There is something so achingly human in that refusal to let go. The way grief transforms a person. The way loss becomes a ride that refuses to stop, with the same drops and turns, the same sickening return to the place where everything irrevocably changed.
The way you frame this story is what moves me most. You build a short, intensely personal tale around that sensation of grief. You follow one man as loss turns his own mind into an amusement park of jolts, loops, and uneasy repetitions. The result is not a conventional plot-driven story so much as a meditation on what grief does after loss, after the shock has nowhere else to go and reality sets in. You understand that grief does not always behave like an ending. Sometimes it acts more like a ride that refuses to stop. You understand that acceptance is not forgetting. That no one is truly lost unless we allow them to be forgotten. That keeping their legacy alive is our duty our quiet, stubborn act of love. You understand that life is disjointed, odd, uneven. And you have the courage to write it that way. In former IT-guy parlance, that is a feature, not a bug. Life is that way. You got it.
